Phonics Screening Check:

At the beginning of June, all Year 1 children across the country will take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, one‑to‑one activity where children are asked to read 40 words, some real and some pseudo (made‑up) words. It helps us understand how confidently your child can use their phonics knowledge to decode words. The check is carried out in a calm environment with a familiar adult. There is nothing you need to do to prepare your child.

Any children who did not pass the Phonics Screening Check in Year 1, will take part in the Phonics Screening Recheck.

You can support your child by reading regularly at home, practicing their phonics sounds, and encouraging them to use their decoding skills when they come across new words. We will continue to teach daily phonics in school, and some children also take part in small‑group sessions.

There is a Phonic Screen Check Information Guide for parents at the bottom of this page, for your information. We will share your child’s result with you at parents evening in the Summer Term. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Year 1 and 2 had a fabulous day of Crafts and Art! They planned and sculpted arctic animal sculptures based on the style of Nick Mackman. They have shown some lovely shaping, chopping and hashing skills! Well done Year 1 and2 !

Reception and Year 1 Nativity Performances:

  • Wednesday 10th December 9.30am
  • Thursday 11th December at 2pm

We are able to allocate 3 seats per child on each performance, due to restriction on hall capacity (more details to follow).

Year 1 / 2 Matthew Trip - 7th October:

Our English topic this term is focusing on Explorers and Pirates. To make this topic more visual and engaging for the children, we arranged a trip to visit the Matthew Ship, Bristol.
Our former-landlubbers learnt about the great pirates of Davey Jones's Lockers, namely the great Blackbeard and have navigated the Bristol harbourside.

Year 1 & 2 Educational Visit to the SS Great Britain - Friday 18th July:

During the summer term our history topic has been focusing on Isambard Kingdom Brunel. To make this topic more visual and engaging for the children, we have arranged a trip to Bristol to visit the SS Great Britain which includes a tour and workshop.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and school uniform must be worn on the day.

In order to fund the visit we are asking for a contribution of £19.50 to be made by Friday 20th June via www.parentpay.com A letter has been sent home with your child, please see copy below.

Year 1 Phonic Screening Check Week : 9th - 13th June 2025 ( details sent home)

Puxton Park Visits Y1 and Y2:

The children were very lucky and had some special visitors from Puxton Park. They told us all about a range of different animals, their habitat, diet and some unusual facts. This experience served as a fantastic stimulus for their English work, providing them with a wealth of ideas for their learning and writing. The children got to get up close to a scorpion, a tenrek, a chinchilla, a snake, a millipede, a rat, a lizard and a duprasi. The children all had the best time!

Visit From Puxton Park on 17th and 18th March:  As part of our ongoing curriculum enrichment, we will be welcoming a visit from Puxton Park as part of their outreach program. This engaging experience will provide the Year 1 and 2 children with an opportunity to encounter a variety of animals up close, including reptiles and furry creatures. For more details, please see copy of letter below.

The visit will take place over two days:

  • Monday 17th March 2025
  • Tuesday 18th March 2025

Year 1 and 2 Explorer Dome Visit: This term Phase 1 classes have been learning all about our planet Earth in Geography. They were very excited to have the Explorer Dome in school. They found out all about different habitats and the animals you might find there. They also learnt about the stars and constellations.

During Parents’ Evenings parents and carers were invited to the Reception and Year 1 Dinosaur fossil and homework project display, all made by the wonderful Phase 1 children. The models and posters the children have made were absolutely fantastic - a display not to be missed!
