At St Martin’s, we recognise the importance of Science in helping children understand the world through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Our aim is to provide a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6, offering varied, hands‑on experiences that promote discovery, relevance and collaborative learning.
Science follows the National Curriculum for KS1 and KS2 and Understanding the World in EYFS. Where appropriate, units are linked to year group topics or taught discretely to ensure full coverage. Some units are split across key stages to maintain coherence, and core areas such as Living Things and Their Habitats are revisited with increasing depth. Other units are spaced deliberately—for example, Electricity in Years 4 and 6—to enable progression in knowledge, vocabulary and disciplinary skills. 'Working Scientifically' objectives are mapped across KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2, with key expectations identified for each year group.
Our Science curriculum is designed to make strong cross‑curricular links with Maths, English, Computing and our wider St Martin’s curriculum. Pupils apply skills such as measuring, data handling, researching and presenting findings in written and oral forms. Science also connects closely with our wellbeing curriculum through collaboration, PSHE links and educational visits. Using the local area further supports pupils’ understanding of their place in the world and their contribution to wider society.
