We believe that children need to understand how the past has shaped the present in order to make sense of the world around them, both locally and globally. History surrounds us and provides the context and relevance for life today. By recognising this, children develop a natural curiosity about what came before them. At St Martin’s, history is taught as a cyclical process of questioning, investigating and building understanding.
This curiosity should underpin all history teaching. Children are encouraged to generate and explore their own questions while also being guided towards key events, concepts and significant individuals. These figures should reflect a diverse range of backgrounds, mirroring the diversity of St Martin’s cohort and helping all pupils see the relevance of history to their own lives. Through engaging with a wide range of sources, children build cultural capital and develop the disciplinary skills needed to continue their learning journey with curiosity, confidence and creativity.
