Behaviour Curriculum

At St Martin’s Primary School, our behaviour curriculum is rooted in our belief that children learn best when they feel safe, supported and able to engage positively with their learning. These values underpin everything we do and shape the way we teach behaviour, build relationships and support pupils to make positive choices.

We place strong emphasis on building positive, trusting relationships with our children. We know that children’s behaviour is a form of communication, and by knowing our pupils well, we are better able to understand their needs, support their emotional development and help them to succeed.

We are consistent in our expectations and routines, which are clearly taught, recapped and displayed in every classroom. Staff expect 100% from pupils at all times, and this is consistently noticed, reinforced and celebrated across the school. This clarity and consistency provide children with security, helping them to understand what good behaviour looks like and why it matters. Predictable routines, shared language and high expectations reduce anxiety, support self-regulation and enable pupils to be better engaged and focused in their lessons.

We are also consistent in our use of rewards and consequences. Rewards are used to recognise and reinforce positive behaviour, effort and attitudes to learning which helps the children to develop confidence and a sense of pride. Consequences are fair, proportionate and restorative, which supports the children to reflect on their choices and to understand the impact of their behaviour. This also helps to guide children to learn how to make better decisions in the future and learn from their mistakes.

Through this approach, we teach behaviour explicitly as part of our curriculum, enabling children to develop the skills they need to be successful learners, responsible individuals and respectful members of the school community.
