P.E.

The P.E. Curriculum at St Martin’s Primary School operates on a ‘Sport for All’ philosophy, where

children participate and develop their own physical skills and strategies according to their own abilities. For more able and/or competitive

children there are opportunities to compete against children in other local schools
in a range of sporting activities from individual
fixtures to local and regional tournaments.

Our aims are to:

  • Involve our pupils in the continuous process of planning, performing and evaluating all areas of activity
  • Provide activities in which all children may participate with enjoyment
  • Provide appropriate opportunities for competitive challenge
  • Encourage the development of positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle
  • Ensure safe practice during physical activity

All staff at St Martin’s promote and encourage sportsmanship, team spirit and the need to improve performance through healthy physical activity. The school was awarded Healthy School Initiative status, which promotes exercise and a sensible balanced diet.

Extra Curricular Clubs

At St Martin’s we offer a wide range of Extra Curricular Sports Clubs to give our children additional opportunities to access sport in a fun, safe and welcoming environment. The following clubs will be running during the school year and letters will be sent out to advise parents when these start. Please note that spaces are limited and will be given on a first come, first served basis.

SWIMMING

The National Curriculum requires all children leaving Primary School are able to swim at least 25 metres. Our current Swimming Policy is to provide swimming lessons to all children in Year 6 that are unable to swim 25 metres.

At St Martin’s Primary school we believe swimming is a hugely important life skill, which is why we are aiming to offer all children the opportunity to learn water safety and gain confidence in the water whilst learning to swim during their time at school.

Our School Swimming Policy be changed from January 2014 to reflect our aims thanks to the Governments new Sport Premium Funding.  From January 2014 all Year 2 children will be attending weekly swimming lessons, in addition to this Year 6 non-swimmers will also continue to receive weekly lessons.

SPORTS PREMIUM

What is Sport Premium?

The Government provided funding of £450 million per annum for academic years 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 to provide "new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This funding has been jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport; the money has been allocated directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. The Government has continued this pledge and funding of an extra £150 million a year will be shared between Primary Schools in England until 2020.

Eligible Schools

Funding for schools is calculated by the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11) as at the annual schools census each January. All schools with 17 or more primary-aged pupils have received a lump sum of £8,000 per year, plus a premium of £5 per pupil. Smaller schools will receive £500 per pupil.

Purpose of Funding

Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding include: 

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE 
  • new or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.
  •

Accountability

Schools will be held to account for how they spend the sport funding. Ofsted will strengthen its coverage of sport and PE within the Inspectors’ Handbook and supporting guidance, so that schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision offered.

*It has been agreed that cluster qualification tournaments will need to be hosted in level 2 sports where participation has been traditionally high, where it is not possible to accommodate the demand. This will specifically include primary football (excluding Small Schools). Sports-hall Athletics (pending local interest), Quick-sticks Hockey and High 5 Netball may also be subject to this as demand dictates. Colleagues are asked to agree cluster tournament dates at least three weeks in advance of the Level 2 Finals to provide sufficient time for re-scheduling in the event of postponement. These dates must also be shared with the SGO with sufficient notice if event support is requested
